Kids are born ready to explore their world. Because of their natural curiosity, they should be taught the risks associated with electricity. Here are five tips for keeping them safe.

1. Electricity and Water Don’t Mix

Each year, many accidents happen when electrical items come into contact with water. Teach kids to never mix the two. Also, if they notice an electrical appliance in a body of water, they shouldn’t reach in to retrieve it or even touch the water and should instead tell someone about it.

2. Don’t Yank the Cord; Pull the Plug Instead

When electrical devices need to be unplugged, kids should be taught how to gently pull the plug to disconnect it from the outlet. Some people have a tendency to yank the cord, and this is dangerous. Yanking a plug can damage the appliance, the plug itself and/or the outlet. Exposed wires can cause much bigger problems. If you notice any electrical issues in Gonzales, TX, GVEC Electrician Services can repair it for you—just give us a call.

3. Padmount Transformer Boxes Aren’t Toys

A transformer box may look like a fun place to climb and play, but it’s not and should never be treated as a “jungle gym” or a toy. In fact, children should be taught to steer clear of these big green boxes and to avoid even touching them. Why? Because they house important electrical components that little hands should never come in contact with.

4. Downed Power Lines Must Be Avoided

Storms can occasionally bring down power lines, and this is extremely dangerous if those lines have live wires. Rather than approaching these lines, kids should be taught to notify an adult right away and have that person call emergency services.

5. When in Doubt, Ask an Adult

Children should be taught to ask an adult whenever anything arises they’re unsure about. Accidents often happen because kids were just trying something out. When electricity is involved, experimentation isn’t a wise idea.
