What is Whole Home Surge Protection?

Whole-Home Surge ProtectionAt GVEC we are always looking to provide valuable services that enhance the lives of our customers. We know that the safety of your family is important. We also know that the electronics in your home are worth protecting and can be expensive to replace.

Whole home surge protection is a way to help reduce the risk of a power surge causing any harm or damaging your appliances and other valuable equipment by stopping the surge before it enters your home. A surge protection device is hard-wired directly into the main electrical panel of your home by a licensed GVEC electrician, giving you peace of mind knowing that your loved ones and investments are better protected.

What is a Power Surge?

Power surges are short electricity bursts that create a spike in your home’s electrical current, potentially causing damage to your home wiring, electronics or appliances. The stronger the surge, the more likely they can cause damage to electronic devices.

What Can Cause a Surge?

Too Many Plugs and Overloaded

  • Electrical Storms. Lightning is potentially the most severe source for a power surge. Lightning can generate enough excess power to fry every appliance and piece of electrical equipment in your home.
  • Improper/Worn Wiring. The condition of the electrical wiring in your home can affect how well it can handle excess voltage.
  • Devices That Run Off Motors. Any device that uses electricity, specifically those that run off motors, have the potential to cause a power surge.
  • Overloaded Outlets or Circuits. Plugging too many appliances or electronics in the same socket can lead to power surges and electrical fires. Make sure to monitor the outlets where you plug in multiple electronics to avoid overloading them—behind your TV and under your desk are common places for overloaded outlets.

It is important to note that surges originating within a home are not protected by a whole home surge protection system, which is designed to stop surges before they enter your home, at your main breaker box.

How Do Surge Protectors Work?

Surge protectors limit the voltage supplied to electric devices in your home when a power surge occurs, preventing those devices from getting more electricity than needed, and protecting them from damage.

For South Central Texas residents, surge protectors are especially useful during hurricane seasons or heavy storms when power surges are more likely to occur. Surge protectors can divert extra electricity from lightning, however, they do not protect from a direct strike to your home.
